A student has decided to go on hunger strike to protest the delayed calling of the strike by the Government. A form four student said that he will not eat or drink until the government does something. The strike by the teachers which now enters its third week has seen many students going back home after what has seem like a war of words between the teachers' body and the government. The teachers of Kenyan schools and universities went on strike after the government failed to work on what it promised.
"If a student can decide to go on hunger strike on such issue, it shows how serious the matter is," said one education officer who did not want his name to appear here. "This government has shown to all how reckless and inconsiderate it is. If they are committed to improving the lives of people they ought to work with expediency in resolving this stalemate. We can not just talk of increasing the NHIF contribution whilst our education system falls apart, education is as good as health." he added
The government has been sitting on burning coal after it was accused of what people have viewed as a hands off system of dictatorship. Following the Tana crisis which saw hundreds of people looses their lives and thousands displaced while the state remained tight lipped people began to doubt whether there existed a govt or not. "It is really sad to see people die while the govt machinery fight the Al shabab, this is a case of the ostrich burying its head in the sand while its body burns!" an angry civilian retorted.
After what has been seen as a poor show of might, Kibaki's administration has been compared to George W. Bush unpopular rule where the U.S govt lost millions of money over war on terror while the ordinary American sufferred. "Kenya apes much of her leadership from the U.S, like the health scheme which of course sired much shame after the NHIF sham." observed a historian based in Ongata Rongai.
In as much as we cripple the basics of our society like education, which we quickly emphasise, we are bound to see so much teenage suicides come next year when results are out. Therefore the govt should reach an agreement with the teachers before the situation turns grim.
