It is such a love when those in authority grapple with hate
messages that have taken route on social media and text message platform.
Mobile telephone companies are boasting of suppressing hundreds of thousands of
messages labeled as hate messages every passing day. I guess that is just as
good as it is.
The government is breathing fire on hate mongers and in fact
15 bloggers have been questioned on the same. When hate speech is mentioned on
social platforms, Robert Alai’s name comes out loud and clear. He embellishes
hate messages like a river of doom. The other day he was just released on cash
bail.
What mechanism is used to quantify a hate message from
normal conversation? Hate message as they say, is a message that inflames and
motivates the public into violence. If my definition of hate speech is what I
deem as what it is, then we are frying the wrong fish.
Hate speech circumvent s not only speeches and text messages
or blogs/face book updates/tweets but also the suppression of a public to
certain fundamental rights that they are obliged to. Therefore, hate speech
begins with denying the public of some basic truth, which of course the public
is entitled to.
It began some time back when, IEBC with the full knowledge
of the media went around and manipulated the right of the public to know. The
silence of the media and the laxity of the IEBC invoked public speculation. The
heat of the situation became rather high when the elections ended up in
dispute.
To mark up the grave of everything, the international media
was riddled with escalating of what was hitherto a lie. Before the dust could
settle, the government banned all public gatherings and even went further to
blockade Uhuru Park with a heavy security presence.
The silence that followed these events was greeted with a
sigh of relief as everyone, who is in position of influence desperately
wringing hands calling for peace. Peace for me in this context is hate speech
of the first order.
Looking back I am tempted to believe that, the flying
prurient and incessant messages are just pugnacious and pragmatist! They are
not in a way targeting anyone; they are expressing an anger that has not found
a way with strict government rules. The anger that stems from present and past
injustices, instead of being validated has been swerved into the gutter.
The anger is about the commissions which after being
declared independent have remained infertile and invalid. The commissions that,
instead of delivering, are being used to suppress fundamental freedoms. These
commissions are the real hate speeches. There operation inflames making anger
to flare up provoking vigilant Kenyans to write what is termed as hate speech.
The public vetting of judges and other commissioners was
also a sham or a spittle in the public eye. Their operations are hitherto under
question if the recent operation of the National security Intelligence Service
(NSIS), the police service, the office of the Permanent Secretary are anything
to allude to. The Judiciary will also put itself to task with how it handles
the election petition which of course has the reputation of the Independent
Boundaries and Elections Commission at stake.
Anybody who has a keen eye would likely see a cover me I cover you play
in all that is going on. After all the public is just a bait to a predestined
goal.
